FOUR SQUARE HOUSES

COMPETITION OF IDEAS    ROME/TOKYO    IT/JP  2008

Competition of ideas: it struck us as it is a very interesting topic, namely the design of four residential buildings within a square lot of predetermined dimensions, that could be repeated horizontally and vertically, to create new residential districts in Tokyo. Our proposal is the creation of four partially buried squares, having, in any case, more than sufficient lighting and ventilation on the lower level; this allowed us to lower the total external volumes of buildings, from the street level by about two and a half meters, which we considered to be 0.00m. The design choice was made by the desire to create good privacy, without renouncing open and illuminated spaces, above all it allowed to open and use glass walls, that have created a spatial and volumetric continuity.
